"Parallel Texts in Parallel Worlds. Assessing Validity in Interpretation and Translation through Descriptive Text Corpora" in

Language Policy and Language Education in Emerging Nations (focus on Slovenia, Croatia, Austria, Spain, and Italy)

Editing byRobert de Beaugrande, Meta Grosman and Barbara Seidlhofer, with Foreword by Henry Widdowson

This paper is on the translational issue represented by the cultural elements related to space and identity. It introduces factors and issues related to error analysis and geo-specificity in translation. Factors of relevance in determining localization and cultural specificity appear to be either distorted, omitted. From food to plants, the element of ‘alterity’ and cultural differences seem to have been overlooked, as lexical equivalents are rendered with superordinates, thus distorting cohesion in  the dynamics of spatial representation and imagery.  The selected units feature the ‘Great Unknown’ and ‘new worlds’ with reference to urban space (Florence, Venice), and colonial landscapes (the Australian Bush).
